Collection includes: I. Speeches delivered at the laying of the foundation stone of the National Library building at Canberra on Friday 23 November 1934. II. Form letters for 1954, informing readers their requests for books are available. III. Letter to Prime Minister, Joseph Lyons, dated 11 October 1935, from John Masefield confirming his promise to send the Library a copy of the Murray portrait of William Dampier. IV. Letter, dated 3 November 1934, to Dr Binns from John Masefield requesting change of dates for the laying of the foundation stone of the National Library building. V. Library Committee meeting agenda for 12 October 1926. Twelve signatures appear on the back. VI. Copy of "Catholic Fireside", 26 April 1935.

The English poet, playwright and novelist John Masefield was born in 1878 in Ledbury. After running away to sea early (when he was thirteen) he settled in London from 1897 and devoted himself to writing. Later he moved to Oxford which was where he lived when most of the following collection was produced. Masefield became Poet Laureate in 1930 and was awarded the Order of Merit in 1935.
